8. Why Your Machine Shop Is Really a Logistics Business
Podcast: Play in new window | Download
Most of us got into manufacturing because we love making parts. But the longer I run a shop, the more convinced I am that we’re really in the logistics business. If your machines are running but parts are still late, the problem might not be production at all. This week, Paul Barnes and I break down the three flows that determine how well a shop performs: material, information, and decisions.
We start with material flow, from reducing WIP and getting raw material to the machine faster, to how large manufacturers use everything from supplier-managed inventory to drones to keep production moving. Then we shift to information flow and why real-time visibility through your ERP can make or break communication on the shop floor. I also share a costly communication miss from our own shop this week.
Finally, we tackle decision flow. Paul and I debate whether the answer is empowering people, adding capacity, or fixing the root cause. We don’t agree on everything, but that’s what makes the conversation valuable.
We wrap up with practical ways to map your bottlenecks and improve flow before investing in more machines or people. Because the best shops don’t just make parts. They keep work moving.
